  1. THE CHAOS ENGINE
  2. IBM PC Demo for DOS
  3.  
  4. GETTING STARTED
  5. You must have at least 600K of free memory in order
  6. to get the best game play from The Chaos Engine.  To check
  7. available memory on your PC type MEM at the DOS prompt.
  8. Look for the line which says 'largest executable program size'.
  9. If this number is less than 600K you may experience some 
  10. difficulty in loading and playing The Chaos Engine.

  13. INSTALLING THE DEMO
  14.  
  15. 1.  Copy 'CHAOS.EXE' from the CD-ROM into its own directory
  16.     on your hard drive.
  17.  
  18. 2.  At the DOS prompt, change to that directory, and type 'CHAOS' 
  19.     to expand the file.
  20.  
  21. 3.  At the DOS prompt, type INSTALL.

  24. USING THE INSTALLATION SCREEN
  25. The installation program is menu driven.  The Main Menu is
  26. the first menu to appear.  Using the cursor keys you can highlight
  27. any one of the seven options available.  To select an option
  28. highlight it then press <Enter>.  A new sub-menu will now appear
  29. for that option.  All the menus work in the same way using the
  30. cursor keys and <Enter>.

  33. CONFIGURE
  34.  
  35. The CONFIGURE sub-menu gives you 4 features to reconfigure:
  36.  
  37. 1.  VIDEO
  38. Choose from 256 color normal or 256 color Tseng for Tseng chip 
  39. based cards.
  40.       
  41. 2.  SOUND
  42. This determines what plays the sound effects during your adventure.
  43. The Install program only displays the sound options that it believes 
  44. are available to you.
  45.  
  46. Some of these options may require you to declare various additional
  47. settings (Interrupt, Port and DMA).  If you don't know what these are, 
  48. leave the default settings intact.  If you have to change them, use 
  49. the cursor keys and <Enter> to select the appropriate settings.  Either 
  50. way, when you are finished using the cursor keys, highlight OK them 
  51. press <Enter>.

  53. You can also test the current settings.  Ensure that your soundcard 
  54. speakers are turned on; then highlight (Test) and press <Enter> 
  55. (or simply press T) to hear a quick sound test.
  56.  
  57. Please note that only true Soundblaster and Ad Lib cards are guaranteed 
  58. to work with The Chaos Engine.  Some other soundcards claim to be 
  59. compatible with Soundblaster and/or Adlib but they don't always 
  60. function 100% correctly.

  62. 3.  MUSIC
  63. You can also choose what is used to play the menu music.  If you have 
  64. two sound cards (e.g. Roland and Soundblaster) you can set one to  
  65. play the sound effects (see 2 above) and the other to play the music 
  66. if you prefer.

  68. As with the SOUND option, the install program only displays the soundcards 
  69. it has detected.

  71. 4.  CONTROL
  72. You can have either keyboard and/or joystick control.  Please note that 
  73. two players cannot both play using the same joystick.

  75. <Joystick and Keyboard>
  76. You will be asked to calibrate your joystick for control of player one 
  77. as well as define the keys for the second player.

  79. <Keyboard and Joystick>
  80. USE THIS OPTION IF YOU ARE PLAYING WITH A KEYBOARD ONLY.  The same as 
  81. the joystick and keyboard option but with the roles reversed.  Ignore 
  82. the 'No Joystick Connected' message when you make your selection.

  84. <Joystick and Joystick>
  85. Here both joysticks will have to be calibrated.
  86.  
  87. <Exit>
  88. This will take you back to the Main Menu.
  89.  
  90. SAVE SETTINGS
  91. This Main Menu option will save a configuration file back to either 
  92. the floppy game disk or the hard disk.  It contains the settings you 
  93. have chosen.  Once this has been done you don't need to run the 
  94. Installation program again unless you wish to change the settings again.

  96. VIEW READ.ME
  97. The READ.ME file contains this information.

  99. VIEW AUTOEXEC.BAT
  100. Display the contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file for your reference.
  101.  
  102. VIEW CONFIG.SYS
  103. Displays the contents of your CONFIG.SYS file for your reference.

  105. EXIT
  106. Exits the install program and returns you to DOS.

  108. ENJOY THE GAME
  109.  
  110. Pressing F10 will toggle pause on and off during play.
  111. ESC brings you back one screen in the pregame menus.
  112. CTRL+F1 will quit the game and bring you back to DOS.
